IP rights are one thing… The musicians ideas are another

Ukraine has made some strides in protecting Intellectual Property (IP) rights over the last number of years, though this is not the only problem that exists within the Ukrainian music industry. While there are a handful of international labels in Ukraine, in talking to many musicians this is not necessarily a great thing, as the…

Fayno – Pan Pupets – Ot Vinta – A quick listen.

I finally took some time to take a listen to the albums I mentioned below, which includes L’viv-based Fayno, Ivano-Frankivsk-based, Pan Pupets, and Rivne’s very own Ot Vinta. Fayno’s album I ta lyubov put out on the UkrMusic label. I’ve heard this trio perform live before, however there is always a difference between a studio…

More releases

Well I can’t say that they are completely releases, but a couple of new CD’s I picked up from Yaroslav Melnyk on Majdan the day before I flew out of Kyiv. Given I missed Ot Vinta‘s release of Poperedu Zhakhy Shlyakhy party last week, I picked up the CD. I hope to take a listen…

A Fleeting Mix up

Well it seems that the new Pyvna Bochka location on Bohdana Khmelnytskoho wasn’t ready for the onslaught of people who appeared at their doors last night. It turns out that renovations have not been completed, and the Flit concert has been rescheduled for January 20, 2007. Things like this do happen in Ukraine, unfortunately.

A little off topic pondering

As I wandered along Kyiv’s main street, Khreshchatyk, a melody popped into my head. I had to stop and wonder for a moment where it was from, then I remembered. It was a tune done by a band called the Hidden Persuaders, and written by its front man Waymon Boone. In the early 1990s, a…

CD Signing Session

While walking through Metrograd in Kyiv today, I noticed that Druha Rika will be doing a CD signing session at the EuroStar Store in Metrograd by the Bassarabska entrance. Unfortunately a long wait for a meeting with a potential client/partner yesterday prevented me from getting out to Pyvna Bochka in Obolon’ yesterday for Ot Vinta’s…

Druha Rika – New Album

The band Druha Rika has been around the music scene in Ukraine since 1996, and symbolically they are putting out a tenth anniversary album called Dennich, a play on words for DayNight. All but the title track, Dennich, of the 13 track album is new, other material was selected material from their previous albums which…

What ails the industry?

After spending half a day, thanks to Kyiv’s wonderful road infrastructure, to attend one meeting with my boss, we headed back out of town towards the Komora Studio where the Telnyuk Sisters were holding their last rehearsal before hitting the road for their promo-tour for their new album. We listened to a couple of songs…

Flit – To perform this Friday in Kyiv

Flit [pronounced fleet] will be performing at the opening of a new Pyvna Bochka located at 3 Bohdana Khmelnytskoho, in the center of Kyiv. The four guys who make up the group hail from Ivano-Frankivsk and have developed a pretty good following from the University crowd. Their first album Svit takyj blends sounds of Offspring…

Testing your Tartak knowledge

Well I learnt something the other day, and this is good, it keeps me alive. Now I digress! My maternal grandfather, Lloyd Ernest Goodfellow, who was undoubtably a lover of checkers (draughts) and a very good player of the game, used to tell me:”As long as you learn something new each day life is worth…
